A word of caution for all the "grooms" who have been dreaming of transporting their brides in "economy limousines" after their wedding ceremony as the very "showoff " can turn into an embarrassment for them. The police can seize the "jugaru modified limousines" on the spot.
The traffic police has appealed to the residents not to hire the "jugaru limousines" for marriage ceremonies as these are considered illegal by the Punjab and Haryana Court and using these is an offence.
It has been observed that a number of limousines are available in the market with varying rent packages. The cost of an original limousine is much more than a "jugaru" (locally manufactured) models of limousines in the market.
The trend of hiring limousines for wedding ceremonies is more than one decade old in the state. The NRIs introduced this and it gained popularity in the regions with a good population of NRIs.
Now, to show off their wealth, people often hire the locally manufactured limousines. They shell out Rs 10,000 or 20, 000 to hire these vehicles for one day.
According to the ACP, Traffic, Dhruman Nimbale, a writ petition has been field in THE Punjab and Haryana High Court against the use of modified limousines. The matter is sub judice and there is a stay on the use of modified limousines. He said: "We appeal to the residents that if they want to hire limousines for their wedding programmes they must hire the original ones. If they hire the modified (jugaru) limousines, then it can prove to be costly for them. The police will seize the vehicles on the spot. So, to avoid the inconvenience they should not hire such limousines for marriage programmes. Moreover, the use of such limousines is illegal and as such an offence," he added.
